The Costa del Golf
It is the largest concentration of golf courses that exist in Europe, in the smallest space between Rincon de la Victoria and Sotogrande. There are 44 golf courses which form an unprecedented rich tourist heritage, for they are of a high quality and many of them are considered to be the best in the world.
In fact, the Costa del Golf has acquired a spectacular development in the last decade and existent prospects expect moderate growth for the next years. The municipalities which have this type of installation are Rincon de la Victoria, Málaga, Benalmádena, Mijas, Marbella, Estepona, Benahavis, Manilva, and inland of the province at a stones throw from the coast, there is Alhaurin el Grande, and Alhaurin de la Torre.
To the 44 golf courses corresponding to Málaga, there are also four in the province of Cadiz at La Alcaidesa, Sotogrande, San Roque Club, and Valderrama. This final course being the grounds on which the Ryder Cup was challenged for the first time outside of the United States or the British Isles. This alone has brought about a spectacular boost for the promotion of golf tourism in the country. Also the Costa del Sol is most famously known for having the largest density of courses per square kilometre in the whole continental Europe.
The Sotogrande Golf course, often referred to as the ‘Number One Golf Course in Europe’, is an 18-hole course. The Club House also includes a Pro Shop, Swimming Pool, Tennis Courts, Gym, Restaurant, Bar, driving range, putting green, chipping green, showers, sauna, jacuzzi, changing rooms and the ability to rent clubs, buggies or trolleys. Golfers also enjoy the availability of other amenities offered by the Costa del Sol, enabling them to mix practicing their favourite sport with a spot of sight-seeing. The courses themselves add value to the Costa del Sol, as the average golf tourist spends four or five times more than conventional tourists. The economic profile of golfers tends to be of a higher class, which entails a multiplying effect on hotels and holiday rental properties.
The Costa del Sol attracts golfers to practice their favourite sport, a demand which brought about a hotel occupation calculated to be between 70 and 100 percent during the non-vacational months.
