Costa del Sol - The Premier Leisure Destination Of Spain

The Costa del Sol is quickly becoming one of the most important leisure destinations in Spain. This is clear from the numerous projects underway in this segment every year that increase the possibilities for fun and recreation.

Recreational centres include Plaza Mayor, inaugurated in May 2002, which has rapidly become the most important leisure park in Andalucia and has plans to expand. Among other unique aspects, this park has liquid crystal screens that project all sorts of visual productions, and a laser piano with 36 light rays for special effects.

Other commercial and leisure projects include Málaga Nostrum, measuring 190,000 square metres (22,500 for recreation, 15,500 for manufacturers, 16,000 for businesses and hotels and another 36,000 for specialized boutiques). There are also approximately 2,800 parking spaces. Other centres have also opened recently such as El Miramar in Fuengirola, la Trocha in Coin and la Veronica in Antequera.

However, in addition to recreation, it is also important to note the cultural selection available in the region. The Miguel de Cervantes Municipal Theatre in the capital city of Málaga offers a splendid cultural selection with a varied programme that included plays, operas, zarzuelas, recitals, and concerts. In addition, this theatre is the headquarters of the Symphonic Orchestra of the city of Málaga. For the past eight years, the Festival of Spanish Cinema in Málaga has also been internationally recognized. Cinema festivals are also held in other towns, such as Benalmádena, Marbella and Estepona.

Without a doubt, Málaga features one of the most complete selections for the recreation in all of Spain and for a wide variety of audiences. An endless list of attractions makes Málaga an incomparable destination when it comes to recreation. Here are a few examples:

The theme park Tivoli Costa del Sol (recently acquired by the firm Arenal 2000)

Three water parks on the coast (in Mijas, Torremolinos and Velez)

The underwater park Sea Life

Fuengirola Zoo

Horse races at the Costa del Sol Race Track within the town limits of Mijas

Crocodiles Park in Torremolinos

Funicular in Benalmádena

There are also 2,400 restaurants in the province and almost 9,000 cafes and bars, tablaos boleras (Flamenco clubs), scuba diving centres, schools to learn paragliding and delta-wing, and the list goes on.

If we add the night life such as that of Puerto Banus, the thriving Benalmádena Marina, the Málaga historic district of the Pedregalejo beaches, it becomes clear that on the Costa del Sol recreational activity is available around the clock.
